Made of cast metal and standing about 7” tall these three Geisha Women are attributed to American-Turkish designer James Mont, often compared to George Raft because of his association with mafia figures. When one looks carefully fully woven story emerges. The first women is bowed down in humility representing the formal surrender on September 2, 1945 (Hirohito had announced surrender on August 14).
The Geisha in the middle represents the occupation but seems to be beckoning one to take her hand and move ahead. The third Geisha sees a future and wants the other two to join her.
While Japan had much to do to rebuild it was laying the foundation on its journey to become an economic powerhouse.
